tipz 4 tanking pls?

Öffentlich
So after completing Hall of the Novice training (albeit with some struggle, something I never encountered with any other role in the game), I decided to finally take on my first levelling duty as a Gladiator.

Needless to say, I was literally thrown into the fire. I got Ifrit on normal mode, of all things, as my first duty as a tank. It shook me a little, but that was nothing compared to how the fight went down.

Despite my fast blade > savage combo, I could never hold enmity on the boss for more than a minute before he would turn to a lancer in the party. My party got wiped one time and while the second attempt was successful, it didn't go any better. I got a good grilling by my other teammates at the end, where I learned that having updated gear and using Flash is an important thing (I had a level 5 sword in a 20+ duty). Funnily enough, it was that fight where I leveled up to gain Provoke, which should help a lot from here on...?

Anyway, here are my questions:

1) When an add spawns, should I shift my focus away from the main boss and turn towards that, draw them in with Flash/Shield Throw or something else entirely? I'm just a bit worried that if I turn my attention away from a target that sudden, I might lose my enmity towards the previous target.

2) What's the best time/way to initiate a boss fight or even just a regular dungeon? In the case of Ifrit, I just sort of instinctualy waited for he healer to get their buffs on everyone and awkwardly ran towards the boss with a shield toss to start. I think I can do better?

3) Should I generally avoid the close-range AOE's or just take them to keep up damage at my attack range?

I'd appreciate the help. I love you~! ^^

tanks generally have a pretty hard time holding enmity at lower levels, so don't get discouraged if you lose it!

the 1st question really depends on the fights.

2nd, yeah that's pretty much what you do when starting fights. using flash 3 times when you first pull helps maintain enmity on the boss.

3rd, unless you know you can take the hit and the move doesn't have any other effects, escape all AOEs, close range or not. you're gonna make it harder on the healer if you don't!

Yes, the level 5 weapon was the reason you couldn't hold aggro. On single targets you should never ever be using Flash.

As for adds it depends. Yes always start with Shield Lob, but if the dps are focusing on the adds then focus on them until they're dead. If you're ignoring adds then just focus on the boss and Flash enough to keep them off the healer. Some adds (like Tam Tara final boss) are so weak you can ignore them completely.

As for opener, pretty much just Fight or Flight followed by Shield Lob. Eventually you will get Circle of Scorn which you also want to use in your opener (and use pretty much whenever you can 99% of the time).

1. As a general rule, pick up the adds. Use Shield Lobs and Flash depending on placement. Once you have their attention, they should group nicely with the boss so you can flash all of them.

2. As long as the party members are nearby just start when you're ready. If the healer casts Eye for an Eye on you, start the fight asap. Use Fight or Flight as you beginning running in, before your first Shield Lob.

I like to start boss fights by running through the boss after the first Shield Lob, as I'm starting my enmity combo. This is so the boss is facing away from the party. Don't forget to weave in your off-GCD damage abilities once you get them.

3. Dodge AoEs where possible. As a tank, sometimes the easiest direction to dodge is through the boss. Just remember to go back to your original position afterwards so the boss is facing away from the party again.

If your dodge takes you out of melee range, throw a Shield Lob, and by the next GCD you should be in melee range again.

In some later fights, you may want to pop a defensive cooldown instead of dodging something. eg. Titan HM circle bombs, where dodging the bombs would get your party cleaved.

When dodging AoEs, be aware of any mobs with cone/beam AoE attacks and try not to dodge in a direction that might make those mobs aim at the party.

Thanks! This clears up a lot of things and running through the boss sounds like a useful strategy. Thanks, Thea and Kupo!

As my guildmate always says:

-If you're a Tank, you're cool by default!

-You're the tank, you're cool!

-I ama tank, you're also a tank, I am cool and so you are!
