A blast from the past.

Yes, after almost TWO years of sitting, I actually got off my (not) Fat ass and got back to writing 'Modern Girl'! Chapter 6 is done and I am bumping this up to current along with the all the newly written parts.

I know it has been a while, but I am hoping the fans that actually still read my writing will enjoy it. 'Modern Girl' was one of my more popular pieces of writing back in the day, and many of the chapters got quite a few views. I honestly doubt it will be like that now with the Lodestone the way it is, but you never know.

I really enjoy writing it and I am hoping my renewed interest will be sustained to keep it going again. I REALLY want to know how Annabel continues to cope with magic as well as that foul mouthed Selene in the real world.




Chapter 6: Learning from a different perspective.


You sometimes hear people say; "I wish something interesting would happen in my dull, boring life." As someone who HAS had this happen to her, I'm here to tell you; "Oh no you DON'T, because it is complete and absolute shit!"

And HOW do I know this you ask? Well, a few days ago my not so dull, fun, vibrant and privileged life was thrown upside down for a loop thanks to a series of unfortunate events. These 'events' caused both a magic book and a strange fairy like thing to be 'bonded' to me. What is 'bonded' you may ask? Well honey, it basically means I was STUCK with it with no way to get rid of either of them for the rest of my now what seems to be miserable life. Oh, and before you bother asking, yes it seems that 'magic' DOES exist. Well not here per say but in other places. It just manages to find it's way to our world from time to time in the form of things like books. And GUESS what big thing the Ashcroft family likes to collect? Yep, you got it, books, lots and LOTS of books.

You see, some of these books are 'magical' in nature and can do special things if you know how to 'awaken' them. Luckily for us, no one seems to know this so the books stay all sleepy and mundane, just looking weird and unreadable. But once in a while someone stumbles upon the secret and either learns how to unlock the power within them, or fucks up and does it accidently. Yeah, guess how I KNOW that?

Now, I am sure you are thinking, "Annabel, so how DOES one unlock one of those books in case I just happen to come across one?" And I say, "Shit, you think I am going to TELL you? Ok, fine, Bad Luck! THERE, told you how to do it, Ha!"

Honestly, it was all just a perfect mess of inadvertently having what one needed and accidently doing what one needed to do to trigger and awaken the damn thing. You know, people look at me and say I must have some incredibly good luck to have what I have in life, but THIS 'luck' that allowed me to wake up the magic I could have done without!

So here I am, a twenty-one year old sorority girl who had a wonderful college life of parties and fun, is now not only stuck with keeping the secret of magic, but has to learn how to CAST that crap properly too!

Oh and did I mention; the foul mouthed fairy named Selene, who I'm bonded with, thinks I'm an idiot and is desperately trying to teach me how to properly cast spells.

Yeah, my 'perfect' life has really gone to shit, yay me.

And worst of all? I fucking hate studying. Selene honey, you are in for one HELL of a time....


Saturday morning should have started off great. There was no class that day and I usually look forward to having fun during the day and going to some great party or club during the night. Unfortunately though, this was NOT the case today. For one, yesterday was greatly interrupted by this whole mess involving one of those stupid magic books I mentioned before. This one I was told a textbook of some kind made to help students learn magic, only it had been thrown away and looked like a piece of trash. After getting suckered into buying the damned thing, it ended up in my sister Adora's hands thanks to a ridiculous mistake. This made me spend almost all of Friday trying to get it back from my sister's office, which I did with the help of my other sister, Alea.

All in all it wasn't too bad of a mess up, but now I'm out a hundred bucks plus the cost of taking Alea out to lunch. I also have to constantly think of excuses to tell my sister so I'm not stuck writing that stupid report Adora asked Alea to write. Hey, that's soooo not my fault she got stuck with it!

The whole thing put a big damper on Friday and left me too tired to go out last night, not to mention broke. I never knew my sister could eat so much, where the hell does she pack it on that small body of hers? I'll tell you one thing, NEVER buying her lunch again!

On top of all this, Selene decided that there was no time like the present to start my lessons. After all, she is stuck in this world until I learn magic properly to be able to dismiss her, so she is VERY motivated to teach me. So much so that she expected me to clear my whole schedule for her. As you can imagine, I balked at that, HARD.

"Selene", I said to her as I rose at my usual weekend time of 10 am. "You are fucking crazy if I'm going to give up my Saturday to study and learn some lame ass spells from that piece of trash, surely it can wait till later?"

Oh, she didn't like that one bit and boy did she show it! Her little twelve inch body with it's fluttery rainbow like wings and gossamer dress got right in my face. "Are you KIDDING?" Her doll like face was practically livid and I swear those pointed ears of hers were a fiery red like her current temper. "Look you stupid Blonde ditz of a Hyur," she continued, wagging a delicate finger at me. "We FINALLY got that primer and we are going to use it, TODAY!"

Ugh, there she went, using that word 'Hyur' again. I didn't know what it meant, she never did explain it to me. If I ever find out it is something bad, she WILL hear of it from me! But at that moment my temper equally flared up, and I pointed my finger right back at her.

"Fairy, it is Saturday, SATURDAY! The day THIS Blonde ditz does nothing but have fun and shirks every damn bit of responsibility that I can get away with! And that means honey, NO books, NO studying, and NO anything that is boring as hell!"

I really shouldn't call myself a ditz, but so many do it nowadays it's kind of how I see myself now. Sad? Maybe, but hey I see it as embracing my flaws, which are actually pretty few if I came to think of it. The curse of being perfect I guess.

"By the Fey!" She seemed to use that often with me, I think it was a curse or something from wherever she came from. After saying that, Selene buzzed around me over and over, showering me with that weird sparkly dust that always came from her ass. At least it looked like it did, right now I REALLY hoped it didn't.

"Hey, STOP that," I yelled, trying to swat her away. "I don't want this shit on me, god you're annoying!" She finally stopped and hovered a few feet away, a pissed off look on her tiny face. My face had an equally pissed off look as I saw the fairy glitter all over me. Fuck, it was probably in my hair too; It was a good thing I hadn't taken a shower yet because I was definitely going to need one now. "Thanks a lot you damn Bug! You're just lucky I wasn't wearing anything nice."

Selene's look turned to one of devious mischief. "there's more where THAT came from 'honey' if you don't stop being such a self-centered pain in the ass. Look Annabel, the sooner we do this the sooner I can get unsummoned; you can't deny you wouldn't love that too."

She wasn't wrong, I WOULD love that, getting her small ass out of my life, hopefully forever. If I kept delaying it, that only meant more of putting up with her antics and fucking up my life. Shit, maybe she had a point.

"Fine," I conceded, picking at the glitter on my arms; god I hope it washed out easily. "I suppose I could give you SOME of my time today, say, two hours?"

"Two?" Selene shook her head in disapproval. "No way, I want at least four Bells, more would be better."

"Bells"? I said, thoroughly confused. "What the hell is 'bells'? Whatever it is, it sounds long. "Look Selene, three of anything is about the max I can deal with when it comes to thinking so I'll give you that, deal?"

Selene calmed down considerably at my words. "Fine, three Bells, and I will HOLD you to that Blondie." She looked me over, "yuck, you look a mess, boy I REALLY did a number on you, sorry. Go get yourself cleaned up and we'll start after you're done." With that, the little fairy flew away from me and landed in her little cat bed to wait until I had finished.

Shit, what had I just agreed to? Three Bells? If a bell equaled something long I was going to be PISSED! Well, I would deal with it later. Right now I needed a shower, badly. Leaving my little taskmaster to her thing, I went into my bathroom to clean up and get on with my day, the sooner I got Selene's request done, the sooner I would be free. I just really hoped that this would go smoothly and not be a clusterfuck.

Little did I know what was to come.

Addendum: As you can tell from this chapter I am trying something different. I wanted to experiment writing this from a different perspective to both get writing practice and mix things up some. From the 1st person perspective we get Annabel's thoughts and immediate impressions of the mess she is going through and how she is or is not dealing with it.

The whole chapter will be like this and if you are reading and following Modern Girl, I would like your thoughts on what you think of it written this way. Good? Bad? let me know!
