Modern Girl: Call me, Maybe? Chapter 6 part 2

Öffentlich

Part 2:

An hour later, I was cleaned up, dressed for the autumn weather, and ready to get this study hell over with. Selene upon seeing me made one of her snide remarks about me taking forever to get ready.

Look, I am pretty. Pretty women like to take a loooooong time to look their best. Ok, I admit with my looks I don't HAVE to take a long time to look good because you know, super hot; but hey, I LIKE to do it, OK?

"Well Selene", I said in retort mode., "if you didn't cover me in that crap from your ass, I MIGHT have taken less time, so NOT my fault!"

Oh, that is another thing I usually find myself saying a lot, 'not my fault'. Why? Because everyone always thinks things ARE my fault, which is a load of crap! Take responsibility people so I don't HAVE too!

"Well Blondie," Selene snidely remarked, "if SOMEONE would have simply agreed to study instead of being an annoying Bitch, I wouldn't have had to gone all pissed-off Faerie on you. So yes, YOUR fault!"

SEE! It happens ALL the time, UGH!

"Whatever bug, Look, I'm dressed and ready for your damn magic lesson; so let's just get this over with so I can at least salvage SOME of my Saturday."

Selene had been with me long enough to know that if I was willing to do something to not waste it, so with a "fine, lets go then", she flew into the backpack where the student primer already was, and after zipping it up, I slipped it onto my back.

Luckily for me, either everyone in the house was out or no one thought I was worth the effort to bother, so I made it out without incident and emerged onto the grounds of the Ashcroft estate.

Oh, let me tell you about my home, it's big. Not just big, but big in, holy shit, HOW many acres is this place? . Yeah, BIG. Honestly, I'm just glad they have groundskeepers to take care of the place, cause no WAY in hell would I ever do it! Being that big meant that we actually had our own little forest, and it is there where I was headed to be miserable for the next 3 'bells', STILL don't know how the hell long that is.

It was a crisp autumn day. You know, the kind that the air is just cold enough but not THAT cold, the sky is a clear azure blue, and the sound of dead leaves underfoot made a rather satisfying crunching sound. It was all rather pleasant and dulled my annoyed mood enough to actually let Selene out of the pack. Where I was going was pretty isolated and I figured it was safe enough to let the little pest out to flutter about.

Selene was rather surprised when I did it and took full advantage of the freedom. She flew in all directions as I walked scattering her ass dust all over the place as she excitedly went from one thing to another to examine the surroundings. At least she kept that crap off me, thank God, and was so preoccupied I didn't have to put up with her to spoil my good mood.

After about a half hour of walking, (yeah, BIG), we arrived at our destination, a nice little grove complete with stream and even a small waterfall. I had found it years ago when wandering and enjoyed coming here to get away from the very long list of things that annoyed me. As far as I knew, no one else knew of this place, at least I had never SEEN anyone else all the times I had been here, so was pretty confident no one would bother us as we broke the laws of reality.

Selene looked around approvingly. "Wow," she said, "nice place, it's good to finally get away from all those annoying Hyur habitats. I think we'll make good progress today."

"Remember," I reminded her, "you said three bells, That's ALL I'm giving you fairy, not a minute more."

"Yeah, Yeah," She raised a little hand dismissively. "It's not as much time as I would like, but I'll make the most of it." She darted around looking here and there, then stopped. "Here. Come on, move your ass in those too tight pants blondie, let's get started."

I just rolled my eyes and followed her. Look, I have a nice 'apple butt' and I like to show it off by wearing tight fitting things, so sue me.

I went to where she indicated, it was by the waterfall where it discharged its small fall into a small pool that trailed off through the woods as the stream continued. There were some big rocks nearby and it was there I took out the old book and sat waiting for my forced tutorial to begin.

"Ok fairy," I said as I flipped through the tattered pages. "Lets get this over with. You know, I still can't believe I can actually read this thing, magic is sooooo weird."

"Yeah, well it's going to get a LOT weirder by the time you're done blondie," Selene retorted. "Oh wait, your slacker self isn't going that far, never mind; just TRY to retain the little I am going to teach you in that ditzy head of yours for ALL our sakes."

"Thank God for that," I retorted back. "The less I know about this crap the better.. Just give me what I need to know to send you back and I'll be thrilled. In fact I'll probably throw a BIG party to celebrate your departure."

"Ha Ha, you're soooo funny," Selene shot back. "Wait, you're NOT, so stop wasting time and let's get started, you're wasting your bells. Turn to the beginning of that thing, let's see what we have to work with."

I STILL wondered how long a Bell actually was. Selene mentioning it reminded me to start the stopwatch on my phone, I would time this little lesson myself just to see how long it really took. After doing that I did as Selene asked and looked through the front pages of the book.

"Well," I said, wrinkling my nose at the pungent smell as I browsed through the pages, "it looks like we have the front of the book, there is an index of chapters here. Lets see....Understanding and pronouncing terms, Your first cantrips. Cantrip? What the hell is that anyway?"

"Beginning spells", Selene blurted out quickly. "Easy spells that won't tax the mind; perfect for that ditzy pea brain of yours IF we were doing this the right way."

"HEY!" I exclaimed, just because I am blonde does NOT mean I am dumb. Do they really think that of blonde women where you come from?"

"Well do you blame me, you ARE the only 'blonde' hyur I have met in this realm," Selene pointed out. "I have no one else to compare you to."

"What about my sisters, they were blonde and you saw them."

"The fairy thought for a moment. "Oh yeah, they were. Yeah, compared to them, 'pea brain' fits you perfectly honey. " Selene tittered at her little joke. "But seriously, doing a few of those cantrips might not hurt as a warm up to gauge how well you will be able to wrap your mind around this spellcasting stuff. "

I sighed and said "In short, you want to see how much I really suck at it."

The fairy nodded, "pretty much."

"Fiiine" I turned to the page with the cantrips,"I guess it would not hurt to, as you say fairy, warm up a bit."

I actually was kind of curious myself to see just how well I could cast magic. I mean I did cast those spells earlier, but honestly it had just been quick bumbling to get something done. This time I would be doing it under Selene's guidance in a more relaxed environment. Hell, I would show this bug I was not some stereotypical dumb blonde!

"So how does this work", I asked, continuing to be cautiously curious. It actually surprised me, wanting to learn and all that. I mean don't get me wrong, I am not dumb or anything, just very, very lazy when it comes to cramming useless facts into my ditzy little brain. Honey, I'm rich. Unless a family member does something REALLY stupid with our money, I'll probably be on 'easy street' for the rest of my life. Sure, taken care of and all, but I can live with that. I mean, what the hell else am I going to do with my life? I don't have Adora's brains, ambition, or go-getting attitude. All I have are my looks and ability to twist the opposite sex around my little finger. Those abilities will add up to being what? A model? A trophy wife? Mistress? Nah, family parasite it is, face it, it's just easier, and I DO love easy.

"Here," Selene pointed, hovering beside me, "Sensing Aether, this should be a good one to start with. It will gauge just how much of the stuff there is around you to work with. Not that we'll need much, but it's an easy spell and it never hurts to know."

"Okay," I looked at the tattered page. at least it was short. Meant to show Aether around you then? "Um, what the hell is Aether?" I asked the fairy, she gave me a frown. "I just TOLD you blondie, sheesh , pay attention."

"No you didn't, I pointed out. "You just said it was around me, but you didn't say what it actually DID. Exactly WHY do I need to know?"

Selene huffed out a breath, "Fine, it what makes magic work and all that, powers it up. The more of it you have to work with, the more you can store and use as needed. Skilled Scholars can draw lots of Aether into themselves and use it for all kinds of things. Beginner ones, NOT so much, they are limited to basic crap."

"Wait,, so if you need this stuff to cast, then exactly HOW did I cast those spells before? I didn't have any of that Aether shit inside me. "

"Oh, that," Selene stopped and thought for a moment. "You know, I'm not really sure. Somehow you must have gotten some inside of you, how I have NO idea; maybe when you bonded the book. See, that's a question you would ask a professor, NOT the familiar you just summoned."

"So that is a roundabout way of saying, you have no idea. Wonderful." I sighed, "this shit is starting to sound REALLY complicated. I think I am regretting more and more even agreeing to do it."
