Annabel's REAL life stuff: More show reviews.

As I am kind of bored and don't have anything new to talk about with FF14, I am going to talk about 2 shows I am currently watching that are interesting in different ways; Don't Hurt Me My Healer and Andor. I know, I know, NOT FF14, but as I have said before, MY blog people, if you don't want to read it, that's fine. Go ogle some catgirl pics. ;p

First off. 'Don't Hurt me, My Healer'. This anime got my interest by a friend who posted a snippet of the main character thinking of burning books. I was curious enough to watch it and boy am I glad I did.

'Healer' is about a beginning adventurer, Alvin, who encounters a dark elf healer named Karla and ands up getting um....' blackmailed' so to speak into accepting her as a member of his party. The two of them go around getting into all kinds of trouble as they try to complete Alvin's quests to make him a better adventurer.

I will tell you, this is the funniest Anime I have seen in awhile. The show has some wickedly sharp wit and humor, and the banter between the two leads is pure gold. Karla has some serious skill for insults and Alvin's reactions and retorts to them have me dying with laughter.

Karla goes to heal an orc who got hurt because of her insulting him.

Orc: "You would try to heal me? But why?"
Karla: "Isn't the act of saving another from further suffering reason enough to do so?"
Alvin: "Does that mean you won't extort him after you're done?"
Karla: "..........."
Alvin: "At least try to deny it.."
Orc:: "Such an angel!"
Alvin: (thinking) "That fall gave you brain damage!"

Also, the whole 'Extortion' definition when Karla tries to deny she is trying to extort money from a poisoned creature by giving Alvin every answer that began with Ex and remotely sounded like extortion. That one had laughing so hard, my family was wondering what the hell I was watching. ;p

Oh, and lets not forget Karla's 'summons' who tend to have as many eyes as they do tentacles. Yeah, she is NOT your normal um...'healer'. LOL

There is both a sub and dub of this and I heartily recommend the dub over the sub. The dub's voice actors are just perfect and have way better delivery of the jokes.

I will say though, that if you don't like characters that insult others a lot, stay away from this one. Karla IS kind of mean to Alvin as well as others in a way, but it is done in a humorous tone. Plus he gives it right back at her.

The second show I wanted to talk about is of a totally different take, and that is 'Andor', the new Star Wars series on Disney+. The show is rather unique for many reasons.

If you are nor familiar with Star Wars lore and the movies; 'Andor' is about Cassian Andor, the spy in the movie 'Rogue One' who helped steal the Death Star plans. The show is about Andor's early life and how he eventually ended up working for the rebel alliance.

And yet what makes this show so great is that it is something more. This show is NOT just about Andor and his life. It is about the birth of the Rebel Alliance that we know from the movies; how a bunch of separate cells and small resistance movements came together to form a rebellion that became a credible threat to the Empire.

Yes people, this is NOT one of those normal 'swashbuckler' fast paced adventures that Star Wars stuff usually is. No, this show is an ADULT political spy thriller set in the Star Wars universe with little action and a lot of talking. And people, this is a GOOD thing!!!!

We get to see things from the prospective of various people in the Galaxy. We get to see things from the Empire's side, and how they are so fat and arrogant that they unknowingly create the situation that births the Rebellion. We see the heavy handiness of the ISB and their efforts to find the spies and troublemakers seeding discourse. (They are so bad they use the screams of dying alien children to torture people to talk, and no, I am NOT making that up, it actually happens on the show to great effect.)

We see the views from the powerful leaders of factions, who are tired of what the Empire is doing and secretly use their wealth and power to resist. We see the spies at work using whatever means they have to strike back at the Empire. We see how Mon Mothma, a very rich senator who uses her position to try and do good for the Galaxy, ends up eventually becoming the leader of this rag tag resistance.

We also see the POV from the common people like Andor, who because of the Empire's rules are suppressed, arrested for any reason, and whose lives are made ever more miserable to the point of resisting any way they can.

And all of this is done with great storytelling and superb acting. This is simply the best thing Disney has done with the Star Wars license since acquiring it, and that includes the movies.

I will warn you though that it is a slow burn. The first couple of episodes are slow, but it picked up by episode 3. After that it just keeps building, with each episode getting better and better. Episode 10 was just......;WOW, those speeches, and what it means to resist and the cost to those who do it. The season is not done yet as of this writing with 2 episodes left till the end of season 1.

If you think Star Wars is too silly and juvenile with laser swords, magic powers, robots and cute aliens, 'Andor' will change your mind.
