Forming a Party
Because of the next expansion, FFXIV: Stormblood, is just around the corner, let me detail what I believe to be the 4 primary concerns all static party members must agree with to avoid disbanding and continue to thrive in the current and future raid content. Hopefully, some of my thoughts on the matter help newly formed or existing parties become or stay successful groups.

Logistics
This one's pretty simple. If all members can't agree on the same time to meet, then the party will obviously fail. Even after being able to agree to a raiding schedule, consistently late members will frustrate the punctual members. Constantly being absent for whatever reason is a problem too.

Goals
Every party needs to have a shared goal in mind. Questions and labels come to mind like, "Are we casual?", "Are we hardcore?", or something else in between? Unfortunately, these labels mean different things to each person. These need to be clearly defined and agreed upon.

Progression Rate
I find the breaking point for many groups, is the difference between the lowest skilled member and the least tolerant member. Less tolerant members will complain to each other about the shortcomings of the low skilled players. Lower skilled players may label the other member as an "elitist". The result is at best the replacement of either or the completely disbanding of the entire party. Find members who can look past each other's faults and appreciate what they bring to the table.

Loot
Have a fair and robust system in place. Some things to consider too are if anyone in your party can play another job on the same raiding level. Getting people geared on other jobs like this makes the party flexible if there are any absences and makes filling the empty position easier. Let's reward people for their time and effort.

Post Progression
If your party has done well for itself and cleared the current content, then decide on what your party will do after. Some ideas I've seen and possibly done myself is to get mounts, orchestrion rolls, playing on different jobs or roles, etc. Some parties even go play another game together and come back when new content arrives.

Leadership
There has to be someone who takes responsibility of the logistics and goals detailed above. One person doesn't have to bear the burden alone. Members can each take an active role in managing these concerns. Set expectations, have everyone understand and agree to them, and only then can you hold people accountable if any expectations aren't met.

Strategy
There also needs to be someone who decides what your party's strategy will be on any given fight. Ideally, this is someone who has in-depth knowledge of all the jobs and the roles that they need to play in that specific fight. If your strategy leader doesn't have this knowledge themselves, they need to be able to solicit information from the party members and combine their responses into a viable plan.

Communication
Effective communication between all members is key. Start a linkshell for quick and easy in game communication.

We Need More Features
To satisfy a party's communication needs, it is common to use an external application for both text and voice chat. This is our preferred method because we can chat asynchronously and use voice chat anytime we feel it's more convenient. Each group can explore the options online. They're quite easy to find.
