Too Much Time

LORELEI

I'd received Oruru's excited news while listening to the droning of our Ul'dah representative. He could supply my tavern with the needed spices from Doma, but the prices would be increasing, due to the refugees allegedly subjugating the carts while on route.

It was all a lie. The Monetariets were more likely than not paying mercenaries to rob their own supply trains so as to raise prices while delaying shipments and then selling the very same goods to the merchants who'd already paid a premium price.

I was tired. And I put my hand on Raff's thigh and leaned in. I spoke in Doman to him. "Asche is at the tavern. I want to go."

The giant Au'Ra looked down at me and I saw warmth in his eyes. Raff was family. He was my brother, my friend, and my confident, and a shared partner in my business outside of the Tavern and Inn. He'd left the Steppe decades ago, asking if he could join me during my first venture into Doma. I learned his eye-sight was not good, and though he was amazing with a Masumi, he was by his tribe's standards, a loss. Relegated to the drudgery of old men and women. But with me there was a future.

We had been best friends since that day, and I trusted him with my life.

My staff loved Asche, nearly as much as I did. And it had been too long since he'd come. With a nod, he spoke in Doman as well. "Let me finish with this one. You go. Spend as much time together as you can. And I will return as soon as I am finished."

"Excuse me?" The mustached Lalafell demanded as he stood in his chair. "Speaking another language is rude."

"It was a private conversation," I said as I stood, and the Ul'dah entourage stood as well. "I have just received dire...information about a family member via my link pearl. I must go. But Raff is able to speak for me, and knows the business as well as I."

I could see the disappointment in their faces. They had all assumed by meeting the Mistress of the Tavern they could possibly make deals to their advantage. They had all dealt with Raff before. But they sighed and agreed. I squeezed Raff's forearm where his blue scales did not grow, and then hurried from the room.

I have never been favorable to Aetheryte travel. I preferred something that didn't put me so close to the Lifestream, the Aetheric Sea, as friends called it. But she said he was sleeping, that he looked terrible, and I wanted him in my arms.

I concentrated on the aetheryte at the Tavern, and within minutes I was there. I took a breathe so I could reorient myself. Oruru came rushing up (Lalas move so fast!) and handed me two baskets. "One has plenty of food--and it looks like he needs it. The other are the medicines we used last time he was here. The creams and the salts for the bath. Just ring if you need anything."

I knelt down and hugged her...my wonderful little Chirugeon. "I owe you so much."

"Go," she nearly pushed me over as I stood, grabbed the baskets and traveled up the stairs to the secret entrance to my private rooms in the upper most towers of the Tavern.

I smelled him before I topped the landing. The door was unlocked so I quickly remedied that. I set the baskets down when I saw his lance propped against the wall beside the waterfall he'd built me. It smelled of sea water and something else, and I grabbed the basket with the medicine as I approached the bed.

The lights were lit on the side tables. Asche's dark hair stuck out against the white sheets and he lay on his front, his face turned toward me, his eyes closed and his lips parted in sleep. He was as beautiful as ever, but I could see what Oruru saw. In fact, I could see even more. He was dehydrated and exhausted. He needed food and rest and relaxation. And I intended he would receive this no matter how long he stayed with me.

I knew enough about the Scions that I wasn't fond of them. I knew She would be calling before long, asking him in her nice way to get rid of something, or kill something, asking him to put his life in danger so they could take the glory. Asche disliked it when I spoke this way, so I kept my opinions to myself. Of the few Scions I'd met, Tataru was the only one I really liked. And she always kept me informed of where Asche was and what he was doing. From Minfilia...I wanted nothing.

I removed my outer robe and carefully pulled back the divan. I put my hands to my mouth, careful not to yell out with the obscenities that crowded there. His entire left shoulder from his neck to his side was one big bruise. Most of it was turning yellow, which means it had been there for some time. Varied bruises covered the remainder of his skin. There were new cuts, and a few new scars that weren't there before. I pulled everything out of that basket and set it on the stand.

After washing my hands in the sink, I carefully applied the correct salves to the correct wounds. There were those remedies for the bruises, remedies for tired bones, remedies for everything under the sun. Oruru was careful, even more so with Asche. We all knew his importance, and though we as his second family were not well known, we would support him.

As he supported us.

Oruru's daughter had been in trouble just a month ago, and Oruru had been so grateful when Asche showed up to help. He had sent Raff a few rare swords, and me... he sent me so many things during his travels. But what I wanted more... was him. His time.

I moved his silky hair away from his face and pressed my lips against his cheek. He was still the only Male Viera I'd seen, and he was still the only one who had my heart.

He stirred and lazily opened his eyes. When he realized he wasn't alone he half pushed up with his left arm and saw me--but I saw the panic in his expression. He was paranoid. He was fight ready. Even half naked in the bed.

"Mmm...hi..." he said.

"How long?" I had to ask him. I didn't want to remind him or me that our time was so limited, but I had to know.

He sighed and started to turn over. I stopped him. "Let the salves do their work. I can climb in with you."

"Okay," he said and remained on his front as he moved to the right.

I unfastened everything, including my small clothes and climbed in beside him. He was so warm, and his skin a vast recreation of textures, from scars to smoothness. I lay on my left side and propped my head up on my left hand. I stroked his cheek with my right hand and combed my fingers through his hair. The feathers I'd beaded in were half stripped and worn. I would have to replace those before he left.

"I...think I have a week," he said, and I heard his accent again. His beautiful, Golmoren accent. "Or I'd prefer to take a whole week. I told Tataru where I was going."

"Good," I sat up and began removing the feather from his hair. "You want to talk?"

"No," he said as he reached out and took my arm, and moved his hand to mine and then brought it to his lips. He kissed my fingers and looked up at me with his bright green eyes. "I just want to lay here with you...but I can't stay awake. I'm sorry."

I snuggled down with him and pulled the cover over us. We lay like that, me on my left side, stroking his hair, he on his front, his hand in mine, smiling at me. "You sleep as long as you need. I will be here. I'm not leaving this room. And neither are you."

"Oruru said she needs her bed fixed--"

"Last day. Not now. Your health is first. Our time second."

He smiled at me and I knew it wasn't long before he would be asleep again. "You are beautiful, Lorelei."

"So are you, Asche."

"I love you."

"I love you. Now sleep, Eorzean Hero, or whatever the moniker is. Because when you wake, you are mine."
